If a contemplative atmosphere is sought, a symmetrical, subdued
geometry is preferable to a more dynamic shape. The oldest,
most classic example is the rectangular pool.
Rectangular swimming pools serve a similar purpose in quietly
reflecting their surroundings without the distraction of extraneous
flourishes. Their clean, straight lines can repeat the architectural
planes of a house, and their elongated shapes direct the view
outward.
